NOV. 15: SCHIFF BASES

The IAO is pleased to welcome perfumer Paul Kiler in a technical class about the chemistry of perfume- as seen through a specific example: Schiff Bases.

Saturday November 15
11am – 2pm
Ticket cost: $95

Please note: Cancellations will not be refunded.

We’ll begin with a case study of two of the most famous fragrances that have used Schiff bases, smelling vintage Giorgio, and Poison. We’ll discuss what is in them and try to smell them in the blend. And we’ll discuss and smell ‘Panda’, recently created for Zoologist Perfumes by Paul Kiler.

Then we’ll discuss what makes a Schiff base, how they’re made, from what materials, and how to anticipate what the chemical reactions need and produce as primary and secondary products. We’ll be doing a lot of sniffing of the bases that are available commercially, and some made by Paul Kiler that are not available anywhere else.

We’ll discuss strategies of using Schiff bases in perfumes, and what to expect when you do use them, endeavoring to understand and anticipate what happens when you use them premixed, and also let them form inside a fragrance concentrate over time.

And we’ll end by making some of our own Schiff bases from materials chosen by participants. Most commonly, I expect that you’ll want to make those not able to be purchased elsewhere. We’ll discuss strategies to enable you to make your own Schiff bases at home. Two of the bases available commercially will be available for purchase, since Paul has purchased a kilo of each.

Each participant will receive Paul’s Schiff Base Compendium wall chart for your future reference, as well as several handouts.
